Daniel Snyder, owner of the Washington Redskins professional
football team, has a growing entertainment empire that added Dick Clark
Productions Inc. on Tuesday for $175 million. The deal brings Snyder a library
of once-popular television shows that include "American Bandstand," "The
Golden Globes," "The American Music Awards," "Dick Clark's New Year's
Rockin' Eve'" and others. Snyder's private equity firm Redzone Capital LLC,
which is known for backing entertainment ventures, and Six Flags Inc. made a
joint bid for the Burbank, Calif.-based company. Nicknamed "America's oldest
living teenager" for his eternal youthful appearance and interest in music and
entertainment, Dick Clark founded his company around the popular dance show
"American Bandstand" in 1957. Dick Clark Productions went on to produce other
hit programs such as "The $100,000 Pyramid," "TV's Bloopers and Practical
Jokes" and most recently "The Other Half." For Snyder, the purchase gives him
plenty of opportunities to license the various shows from the library.
Already, Dick Clark Productions has gone into deals licensing the name of
American Bandstand to restaurants and slot machines.
