American Airlines issues a recall

  Share     E-Mail    Discussion    Print Story

Unlike most recalls, like Mattel Inc.'s for lead paint in toys, an airline issuing a recall is a bright spot because the term has an entirely different meaning than for consumer goods companies. In the latest recall, American Airlines is going to rehire 460 laid off employees — most of which were former employees of bankrupt TWA, which American acquired in 2001. In this case, a recall simply means to bring back workers that had temporarily been furloughed during leaner times. The practice explains why flight attendants and other airline employees happen to be so courteous. —Matthew Wurtzel
