John Edwards |
It seems Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is not the only
presidential hopeful with private equity holdings. Joining Romney — at least
for now — is Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards. Honestly, it
should surprise no one — reading this blog at least — that a presidential
candidate has investments in private equity. However, Edwards' investment in
Fortress Investment Group LLC is notable because of the firm's ties to the
subprime mortgage troubles and the Katrina victims home foreclosures — two
issues near and dear to the former senator from North Carolina. Edwards — like
Romney, who while rooting for the Red Sox as governor of Massachusetts was an
investor in Yankees Entertainment & Sports Network — was unaware of some
of the investments in his portfolio. He's vowed to divest those assets and
help the mortgage holders. Romney should take note, because if he's going to
win the New Hampshire primary, he better follow suit and sell his stake in
YES. —
