Gazprom pondered Dow Jones bid?

  Share     E-Mail    Discussion    Print Story

It seems the reporters at The Times of London may have been reading a few too many Ian Fleming novels over the summer because the idea that state-controlled Russian oil giant OAO Gazprom offered to buy a stalwart of business news, Dow Jones & Co., sounds like something out of a James Bond film. The British tabloid cites an obscure reference in a July 10 SEC filing about an unnamed foreign oil company that approached Dow Jones after News Corp. made its bid. The unidentified company never made a formal offer probably because its executives realized most people would think the idea sounds too much like "The World Is Not Enough." Then again, maybe the Rupert Murdoch acquisition of Dow Jones sounds too much like "Tomorrow Never Dies" for some people. —Matthew Wurtzel
