As many predicted when Ron Burkle's Source Interlink Cos. picked up Primedia
Inc.'s enthusiast titles for $1.2 billion in May, a deal with David Pecker's
American Media Inc. could be on the horizon, according to a report
Thursday from the
New
York Post citing unnamed sources. AMI put five titles on the block last
June, after shuttering a few others, and after the Source Interlink-Primedia
deal, it looked like uniting all three could be a good fit. As The Deal's
Richard Morgan wrote in May: " 'Both have distribution and magazine
businesses,' said a source familiar with AMI and a Source Interlink plumped up
with Primedia assets. 'Put them together, and you could really drive scale.' "
While the NY Post said Thursday both Burkle and Pecker believe a deal can
be done, Pecker's style could prove too much for the Source Interlink folk.
The Post noted: "Executives at Source's publishing operation are said to be
'reluctant to report to Pecker,' said a source, who noted there could be many
culture clashes." — Carolyn Murphy
