Comcast to go unwired?

  Share     E-Mail    Discussion    Print Story

A day after speculation that AT&T Inc. would buy a satellite TV provider to better compete against cable, industry observers turn their attention to Comcast Corp., suggesting it would acquire a wireless provider. After all, Verizon Communications' nascent FiOS bundle is putting a dent in Comcast's subscriber base and even its shares. If AT&T joined the TV party, then Comcast could hear an even louder sucking sound as more subscribers are enticed away not by the so-called triple-play bundle of Internet, TV and phone services, but a four-way bundle that also includes wireless. Verizon already offers such a package called the Ultimate Play. If Comcast is on the hunt, then troubled Sprint Nextel Corp., which recently ousted CEO Gary Forsee, looks like a prime target. — Matthew Wurtzel
