Merrill's O'Neal is out, Cribiore to head search

As expected, after poor third-quarter performance and unapproved merger talks with Wachovia Corp., Stanley O'Neal is retiring from his post as chairman and chief executive officer of Merrill Lynch & Co. Alberto Cribiore will serve as interim nonexecutive chairman and will chair the CEO search panel. Cribiore, a board member, is managing partner of Brera Capital Partners LLC, a private equity firm he founded in 1997. He had also been president of Clayton, Dubilier & Rice Inc. O'Neal joined Merrill in 1986, becoming CEO in December 2002.

Cribiore said Greg Fleming and Ahmass Fakahany will continue as co-presidents and and chief operating officers. Also, Fakahany will lead the company's global support, finance and human resources functions, and Fleming will lead the integrated businesses of Merrill, including risk management. — Baz Hiralal
