Adidas scores Mitchell & Ness

Nowadays buying a sports jersey isn't necessarily about having the latest style, so with the growing popularity of vintage shirts Adidas AG acquired Mitchell & Ness Nostalgia Co.

The privately held, Philadelphia-based sports apparel company owns licensing agreements with the National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League and the National Football League (through a Reebok International Ltd. sublicense) to reproduce historically accurate uniforms and other vintage-inspired athletic apparel. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but Mitchell & Ness is said to have registered $25 million in sales in 2003, according to The New York Times.

Adidas has been involved in a global battle to keep pace with the world's largest sports shoes, apparel and equipment maker, Nike Inc. The German company acquired Reebok in 2005 for $3.5 billion and has been reportedly a takeover target by London buyout shop Apax Partners Worldwide LLP. — Gerald Magpily
