Share     E-Mail    Discussion (6)     Print Story

Susan Preston, general partner, CalCEF Clean Energy Angel Fund I LP, spoke at the Alternative Energy Symposium Tuesday afternoon about angel investment in cleantech startups. Preston believes that cleantech is “the next great adventure for investment globally.”

She also speculated that investment in cleantech startups will greatly increase over the next 10 years, predicting "a fourfold increase in the market in a decade is incredible, but we believe that prediction is conservative.”

Still there are some important issues facing early-stage cleantech companies as "less than 5% of venture capital dollars are going into seed-stage [alternative energy] companies; most is going into growth-stage deals."

Early-stage companies are “struggling to get VC financing. There is a huge absence of funding for these companies at the very early stages," Preston said. "Angels are having to invest in second and sometimes even third rounds before the VCs come in. We’re reserving 50% of out fund to continue to back our companies through later rounds." — George White

From: Dr. Steven Burnham,

Have a hard time with alternative energy and where its going, my engineering company developed a new material process for the fabrication of thermoelectric power systems, we have a unit that requires no fuels and works like a champ. Our original test was on an electric scooter that was capable of 40 miles on an 8 hour charge with our unit it made over 1200 miles and still had a 55% battery reserve. The short of it, can't find a dime to launch the product unless we take venture or angel funding from the Saudi's or China, hell we may have to if we want to launch the products.

From: Michael Stein,

From: Dr. Jacob Gitman,

Mr. Stein,

We have developed a proprietary process to produce fuel from algae. Without saying too much, we have discovered a catalyst which converts the raw algae to a solution with the same molecular structure as petroleum crude. "Green Crude" can be processed, identically to petroleum crude, to produce jet fuel, gasoline, heating oil, and gaseous mix of Hydrogen and Methane. If this interests you please contact me at the following address:

Alternatively, if you would provide your contact information, I would be glad to contact you.

Best Regards,

Jacob Gitman, Ph.D.
