GM succeeds with Daewoo purchase

Five years after purchasing troubled South Korean carmaker Daewoo Motor Co., it seems the hard-fought auction was worth the effort as the unit is helping drive sales.

BloggingStocks notes that General Motors Corp.'s South Korean unit Daewoo has become an integral part of the company's future as it grows. Not only is the unit stealing market share from larger rivals Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp. in their home market, but it is propelling GM to leading market shares throughout Asia, most notably a first-place position in China, notes BloggingStocks.

However, the road to acquiring Daewoo was bumpy, and so was the integration of the business in the years that followed. It seems only recently that Daewoo has been a positive for GM. A consortium led by General Motors Corp. on Thursday, Oct. 17, concluded its complex and long-awaited $400 million takeover of bankrupt South Korean carmaker Daewoo Motor Co., following months of wrangling with creditors, labor unions and courts.
