Coming on the heels of a pilots' union meeting to discuss the possibility of industry consolidation, rumors are soaring about Delta Air Lines Inc. launching the next round. The Atlanta-based airline reportedly will ask its board for clearance to begin formal merger talks with both Northwest Airlines Corp. and UAL Corp., according to The Wall Street Journal.
However, simply because Delta's management may be eager to seek a deal, the Journal stated, doesn't mean one will happen. Nonetheless, industry insiders believe airline consolidation is inevitable, The Deal's Lou Whiteman recently noted. - Matthew Wurtzel
