Prosser takes the Fifth 750 times

The bankruptcy of U.S. Virgin Islands businessman Jeffrey Prosser and Innovative Communication Corp. has been a contentious affair. The depth of the acrimony was revealed during a Jan. 25 examination in St. Croix when Prosser pleaded the Fifth Amendment more than 750 times, a transcript shows.

The debtor's counsel said at the outset that Prosser would not answer any questions put to him, some as seemingly benign as the age of his children and whether he or his wife had ever played pool on the $15,000 table in one of his homes. Rather than repeatedly explain that he would decline to answer pursuant to his constitutionally guaranteed rights, Prosser responded "same" to each question. A word count turned up 773 hits, although some matches appeared in questions or in the normal course of speech. - Chris Nolter
