Wharton's Private Equity and Venture Capital conference opened Friday morning with a keynote speech from Carlyle Group's David Rubenstein. Before he could finish a sentence, protesters -- with a gripe about Carlyle's buyout of Manor Care Inc. -- swamped the room and stormed balcony with loud chanting, as 30-50 people steamed into the room passing out fliers.
Rubenstein remained on stage and agreed to address questions from a woman with a mega-phone, who said she was a Manor Care employee, and lit into him. "Obviously we're interested in making the company better, that's why we bought it." Rubenstein said. "It's difficult to change a company in two weeks." "I think a remedial English course would be helpful," he said to the mega-phone touting woman who challenged Rubenstein to guarantee jobs at Manor Care. After about 10 to 15 minutes of continued protest chants from the balcony as conference-goers streamed out the doors, Rubenstein left the stage and the Philadelphia police arrived to escort the protestors out. - George White **Stay tuned for more from Wharton's private equity and venture capital conference, where White is on the scene all day.** See photos of protestors at Dealbreaker Go to earlier story from TheDeal.com on Manor Care buyout Go to earlier story from TheDeal.com on SEIU protesters descending on Carlyle CategoriesComments
From: Anonymous,
When challenged on the buyout of Manor Care, Mr. Rubenstein said, no, we want to improve health care. And here I was thinking companies are bought to make more money. I mean, would he be willing to lose money if it would improve the care? I doubt it. So if he has to lie to himself, maybe he already realizes he's doing wrong. And it's about time everyone else does, too.

From: dean g,
The facts remain the same: 1. Mr. Rubenstein and businessmen like him are focused on making profits. 2. Workers are rarely realistic about their own work or that of a failing company. 3. People have more control over their own reality than they understand due to an old world view: Your Outside aka physical world creates your reality. 4. Taking control is as easy as understanding the Paradigm Shift from Old World thinking to New. 5. People love to bitch hate to change and often times lay blame on everyone or everything else.

I think, Mr. Rubenstein, a remedial course in ethics would be helpful.
