AOL: The orphan no one wants

aol.jpgEarly in the week, it was Rupert Murdoch saying no to questions on whether News Corp. would want AOL LLC, should Time Warner Inc. put it on the block.

Now Barry Diller joins his old boss in saying he's not interested ... unless AOL was priced ridiculously low.

Murdoch's comments came just after Microsoft Corp.'s hostile bid for Yahoo! Inc. Diller's comments were prompted by Time Warner's announcement Wednesday that it may separate AOL's dial-up access business from its content side. The move might make AOL more attractive to potential suitors, should new CEO Jeff Bewkes choose to put it on the block.

Diller explained that IAC/InterActiveCorp will focus primarily on its search and advertising businesses upon completing its split up -- assuming John Malone's Liberty Media Corp. doesn't stop Diller.

So what's Bewkes to do to make AOL more attractive to potential suitors? Well, he may already have his turnaround in place. Dealscape's affiliate Tech Confidential notes that AOL has been on an acquisition spree, buying five online advertising startups, most recently Buy.at. So maybe Diller will rethink his answer if Bewkes chooses to sell. - Matthew Wurtzel
