The road to a possible union between Microsft Corp. and Yahoo! Inc. will be long and contentious. TechCruch blog citing unnamed sources is reporting that the Yahoo! board of directors will have a special meeting Friday to discuss Microsoft's $45 billion offer.

So far, advisers to the board are reportedly pushing for a Microsoft deal, meanwhile some senior executives within the company are willing to do anything but a deal with the software giant. This saga has just begun.

  • SEC Chairman Christopher Cox and other key regulatory officials are scheduled to speak Friday and Saturday at the annual Washington conference, "SEC Speaks" sponsored by the Practicing Law Institute. Discussion will focus on key issues before the commission, including sovereign wealth funds and the investment arms of foreign governments.
  • CKX Inc. pricing period begins. CKX, owner of the "American Idol" brand and rights to the Muhammad Ali and Elvis Presley names, agreed to a $1.3 billion buyout led by CEO Robert Sillerman and "Idol" creator Simon Fuller in June.
  • EU merger decision deadline on Sonepar of France, a privately held electrical parts distributor, to buy the German and Luxembourg units of Rexel of France, the world's largest distributor of electrical parts.
