Majoras announces FTC departure

Federal Trade Commission Chairman Deborah Platt Majoras Thursday formally announced her plans to leave the agency at the end of March, which was first reported by TheDeal.com Wednesday. She also sent a memo to her staff at the FTC saying, "During my time at the FTC, I have been continually struck by the sheer breadth of our work and the real impact it has on people's lives."

She didn't say where she was going, but Washington sources say she is expected to take a senior post in the legal department of Procter & Gamble Co.

Antitrust lawyers have already begun wondering who will replace her and whether there will be a new commissioner to at least bolster the Republican team during the remainder of the Bush administration. In her memo to staff, Majoras said, "I am working with the White House to ensure a smooth transition for the agency." - The editors
