Nielsen Co. named former Reed Elsevier plc executive Gerry Byrne as the head of Nielsen Business Media unit's entertainment publications, which is best known for Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter. The business media is making much of the coincidence that Byrne is a veteran of Reed Business Information, which Reed Elsevier put on the block last week when it agreed to purchase ChoicePoint.
Byrne was group publisher of Variety magazine for a decade. He had been brought into Nielsen as a consultant under former chairman Robert Krakoff, who died suddenly last March after suffering a heart attack. While Nielsen has also been rumored to consider spinning off its entertainment titles, the New York Post notes the Byrne hiring suggests the company remains committed to the unit. If Nielsen is keeping its business-to-business magazines, it stands to reason that it may take a look at the Reed unit. In other related Reed news, paidContent reports that British trade publisher Informa plc is not interested in Reed Business Media because of a key difference: Reed relies too much on advertising. - Matthew Wurtzel See Nielsen story from New York Post Categories![]() Deal Video
