The administration is reportedly interviewing candidates to replace the spot currently held by Commissioner Paul Atkins, whose term expires in the summer. It is not expected that Atkins will seek renomination. Citing anonymous sources, the report stated that the short list to replace Atkins includes Douglas Cox, an appellate attorney at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP in Washington.; Steven Guyunn, an attorney in Gibson Dunn's New York office; Stuart Kaswell, an attorney at Dechert LLP; and Troy Paredes, a law professor at Washington University in St. Louis.
Meanwhile, the two vacancies on the Democratic side may also finally get filled. One post has been empty since November and the other since the end of January. The Senate and White House have been locked in a battle over nominations that range from the government to a number of independent agencies, and the presidential election promises to complicate matters further.
The two potential democratic nominees are Luis Aguilar, a former general counsel at Invesco Ltd. and now a lawyer in Atlanta, and Elisse Walter, a senior official at Finra, or the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Wall Street's self-regulatory organization. - Donna Block
