Blackstone, CPPIB and Manitoba Telecom Services Inc. issued a joint statement on Monday saying they have formed a vehicle that would bid as a new entrant in the upcoming Advanced Wireless Services spectrum auction in Canada. Industry Canada, a department of the federal government, plans to hold the auction at the end of May in an attempt to increase competition in the domestic cell-phone market.
Datascope Corp.-Mindray Medical International Ltd.
In other deal news, medical device company Datascope agreed to sell its patient monitoring business to China's Mindray Medical for $202 million in cash. Datascope, which expects cash proceeds of about $185 million, said in a statement it will keep about $38 million of receivables generated by the business.
Charming Shoppes Inc.-Crescendo Partners-Myca Partners
Meanwhile, struggling plus-size clothing retailer Charming Shoppes said Monday it filed a federal lawsuit against several activist shareholders, alleging that they provided misleading information in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The suit filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia alleges that hedge funds Crescendo Partners and Myca Partners -- as well as board nominees Arnaud Ajdler, Eric Rosenfeld and Robert Frankfurt -- have misrepresented their intentions as legitimate investors. The retailer likened them to "corporate raiders" trying to destabilize the company.
Eyeblaster Inc.
And in IPO news, Eyeblaster, which provides online advertising campaign management services, said Monday it is planning an initial public offering to raise as much as $115 million. The company in the past has raised venture capital backing from such firms as Insight Venture Partners.
