Bear, Lehman shares pounded early

On the heels of Sunday's deal between J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. and Bear Stearns Cos., when the market opened Monday, Bear Stearns shares fell nearly 90% to $3.20, and J.P. Morgan shares gained more than 1.8% to $37.26. As expected, the broader markets were down with the Dow losing 121.63 to 11,829.46, while the Nasdaq fell 33.18, or 1.2%, to 2,179.31

Shares of other Wall Street firms also took a beating at the open. Lehman Brothers Inc. fell more than 34% to $25.98; Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. dropped more than 10% to $39.04; Goldman Sachs Group Inc. slipped 7% to $145.02; Morgan Stanley shares dropped more than 8% to $36.37 and Citigroup Inc. lost more than 7% to $18.32. -The editors
