Cablevision Systems Corp., Newsday's Long Island, N.Y., neighbor, appears poised to jump into the bidding fray for the daily newspaper and
may offer more than the $580 million bids made by News Corp. chief
Rupert Murdoch and his New York City tabloid rival Mort Zuckerman,
Newsday reported Tuesday.
Citing sources familiar with the matter, Newsday noted it is unclear how much money Cablevision, and the Dolan family that controls it, would be willing to pay. Whether the Dolans would try to move a deal forward in conjunction with New York Observer owner Jared Kushner was also unknown. Spokesmen for the companies declined to comment, Newsday said.
But regardless of whether another bid comes in, Murdoch is employing some fire-power to get a deal done. He has engaged former Republican New York Sen. Alfonse D'Amato to help smooth the way toward buying Newsday by making introductory phone calls to Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi and Republican Congressman Peter King. D'Amato's lobbying group, Park Strategies Washington Group LLC, Newsday said, is listed as a lobbyist for News Corp. Murdoch and Zuckerman are struggling for dominance in New York and are both vying for Newsday. But according to the Melville, N.Y.-based paper, one industry expert thinks Cablevision will pony up to keep Murdoch or Zuckerman off its turf. - Donna Block See Newsday story See Dealscape: Is the Newsday auction heating up?
