Pharmaceutical/healthcare companies pumped up their offerings last week with three major acquisitions falling in the top 10 domestic deals of the week charts for the week ended April 11. Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis AG registered the biggest U.S. deal of the week acquiring nearly 25% of eye-care provider Alcon Inc. from Nestlé SA for $10.5 billion on April 7.

For Novartis, the deal will not only expand its pharmaceutical offerings, but it will add surgical devices and consumer vision-care products. Novartis thinks so highly of Alcon it also won the right to acquire Nestlé's remaining 52% Alcon holding for $28 billion by July 2011, which would make the Swiss pharmaceutical the world's biggest provider of surgical lasers, drugs and drops for eye care. Interestingly, the deal marks the second time in a year the two Swiss companies have done a deal. Novartis sold its Gerber baby food business for $5.5 billion to Nestlé last year.

Meanwhile, the second-largest domestic deal of the week was Takeda Pharmeuctials Co. Ltd.'s purchase of Boston-biotech Millennium Pharmaceuticals Inc. for $8.4 billion on April 10.

Lastly, Kinetic Concepts Inc., a provider of advanced wound-care and therapeutic support systems, bought LifeCell Corp., for $1.7 billion on April 7. The Deal's Cheryl Meyer expanded on the benefits of the merger for KCI:

The deal offers KCI three key advantages: LifeCell's extensive network, and experience with surgeons fits well with KCI's new product pipeline; KCI operates in 19 countries and has a footprint in Europe; and the companies can combine research and development operations to focus on tissue repair, tissue regeneration and healing.
