The story by David Carey, Vipal Monga and Vyvyan Tenorio looks at the
pluses and minuses of a new FASB rule, which forces the funds to
produce quarterly marks for longer-term corporate assets for their
limited partnerships -- some of which are glad to get the occasionally
squirrelly numbers, others of which don't want to know. The issue of The
Deal also features our usual M&A quarterly stats, including some
lawyer league tables, plus a story by Lisa Lee on how Wall Street firms
are restructuring their M&A departments to cope with the current
crisis.
Also in the issue next week is an impressive anatomy
of a Time Warner Inc. unit -- Time Warner Entertainment -- that was first
assembled in 1991 and which still exists, albeit as a repository of tax
savings. As Chris Nolter explains, TWE will play an important role in
TW CEO Jeff Bewkes' long-anticipated restructuring plans for the media
conglomerate. But that's not surprising. TWE, with its shifting array
of assets, has played a role in just about every big trend to sweep
through media, cable and telecom for nearly two decades.
Elsewhere
in The Deal, Media Maneuvers tackles Portfolio's "Brilliance" issue and The New York Times' visit with Cerberus Capital Management LP genius Stephen Feinberg, and
Backstory tackles Grupo Televisa SA's suit against Univision Communications Inc. Follow the Money
looks at the looming problem of rising defaults, and we offer two takes
on the still-vibrant middle market: Demitri Diakontonis analyzes
activity in the lower middle market while Luisa Beltran does a Q&A
with Harris Williams & Co.'s Hiter Harris. We've also got stories
on Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd.'s deal with Millennium Pharmaceuticals Inc., Tata Motors Ltd.'s big buy of
Jaguar and Land Rover, and the rise of electronic exchanges in Europe.
It really is dog eat dog in the eternal deal economy. - Robert Teitelman
