TheStreet: 'Extreme Value Hedging' a must read

The Deal's own Ron Orol made TheStreet.com's top 10 list of investment books to read over the Memorial Day weekend. The book entitled "Extreme Value Hedging : How Activist Hedge Fund Managers Are Taking on the World" examines activist hedge fund managers and how they are shaking up corporate boardrooms in the U.S. and many other countries including Canada, Russia, the U.K., China and Japan.

Are activist investors a force for good in Corporate America? It is not so clear to me. I agree that there are many managements that should be sacked but it seems that the goal of most activist investors is to get the price of the stock up in the short term but what they advocate may not be the best thing in the long term for the company.
