JetBlue's LiveTV dials in Airfone

JetBlue_tail.jpgJetBlue Airways Corp.'s airline entertainment unit LiveTV LLC said Monday it is buying the networks owned by Verizon Communcations Inc.'s Airfone unit.

LiveTV, as its name suggests provides television and video entertainment during flights, will use Airfone's systems to expand its e-mail and messaging offerings.

Verizon stepped down Airfone's business in 2006, when the government put the company's ground-to-air spectrum licenses up for auction. LiveTV was among the winners.

In exchange for its spectrum, Airfone received a five-year license for a smaller swath of wavelengths. It continued to provide services to corporate and government aircraft, and to operate a network of base stations.

The news sent Verizon shares up slightly and JetBlue shares down slightly in afternoon trading. - Chris Nolter
