Verizon Wireless may be in talks to buy Alltel Corp. for about $27 billion from TPG Capital and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, according to CNBC's David Faber.
By acquiring the rural mobile service provider, Verizon Wireless would beat out AT&T Inc. as the largest mobile service provider in the U.S.
The buyout firms bought Alltel for $27.5 billion in November. Before the leveraged buyout, Dealscape surmised the possibility of an Alltel-Verizon Wireless deal over a year ago because the two use the same CDMA and EVDO wireless standards. - Maria Woehr
