Auction Block League Tables: Jefferies broad expertise reason for new heights

No changes at the top of the table, but Jefferies & Co. makes its debut at No. 7 this week thanks to two new clients: Emageon Inc., a medical device company in Birmingham, Ala., and International Wire Group Inc., a St. Louis metals manufacturer. With these new signings, Jefferies displays its wide-ranging, "sector agnostic" touch (its other new clients since the start of the year are restaurant chain Dave and Buster's Inc., Comverse Technology Inc. and Arlington Tankers Ltd.). Perhaps this broad reach, coupled with the firm's expertise in middle markets, has Jefferies positioned for a prolonged stay in the top 10? Or better yet, a run at the top of the table? Time will tell.

The other debutante is really a returnee. Banc of America Securities LLC, which resurfaces at the foot of the table, has been here before -- most recently on May 23.

Meanwhile, deteriorating (if they can be called that at these heights) oil markets appear to have taken their toll on hire activity. This week was the first without an energy company among the list of new clients. A temporary blip? Or an indication of a turning of the tide? Energy boutiques such as Tristone Capital and CIBC World Markets have been the surprise stories of the table thus far, dotting a landscape dominated by the old guard (Goldman, Sachs & Co., Merrill Lynch & Co., Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.). Is their moment in the sun nearing an end? And what might this portend of the commodities boom? Probably nothing -- yet. But watch this space.
