Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts and co-founder of Bain Capital LLC, has been suggested before. He attended the Memorial Day barbecue at McCain's home. So why is Romney the favorite? He knows how to raise money, and is well connected with Wall Street.
The speculation comes at a curious time. The press has caught wind of the fact that Wall Street (bankers, and private equity and hedge fund managers alike) prefers Democratic presidential rival Sen. Barack Obama 2 to 1 based on Federal Election Commission donation data. Perhaps the McCain camp feels Romney can narrow that gap unlike the long list of other contenders. - Matthew Wurtzel
