SEIU to air ads tying PE firms to national security concerns

The Service Employees International Union is following up its string of public protests against private equity firms with an ad campaign trying to label the industry as a "potential national security concern."

Citing links between the sovereign wealth funds that bought stakes in the general partnerships of firms like Carlyle Group and Blackstone Group LP last year, the SEIU plans to run ads in six states calling for more federal oversight of the industry. The campaign will charge that buyout firms are providing foreign government-controlled investment funds with a backdoor way to invest in American companies responsible for defense, energy and homeland security.

The SEIU has long been an active critic of the private equity industry. The union sponsored a string of
protests targeting Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. this month and spent much of 2007 protesting the public appearances of top executives at archenemy the Carlyle Group. - George White
