Shire strikes deal for Jerini

British drugs group Shire Pharmaceuticals plc on Thursday unveiled an agreed €328 million ($520.8 million) offer for Berlin biotech Jerini AG to take part in a global run on smaller drug discovery groups.

Basingstoke, England-based Shire said it would pay €6.25 cash per share, an impressive 71% premium on Jerini's Wednesday close, and already has commitments representing 53% of Jerini's share capital.

Shire wants to use its expertise in gaining regulatory approval for new treatments to bring Jerini's Firazyr drug to the market in both the U.S. and Europe. The novel drug treats a rare hereditary disease known as HAE that sparks spontaneous and painful swelling in the mucous membranes of its victims. - Andrew Bulkeley
