$35B Spanish energy deal tops deals of the week

Billion dollars deals were alive and well on the international M&A scene last week.

The biggest international deal of the week was Spain's largest gas supplier Gas Natural SDG SA's $35 billion deal for Union Fenosa SA. TheDeal's Paul Whitfield said a successful deal would bring Gas Natural into the Spanish electricity sector after two failed attempts. It was stymied in earlier bids for Spain's two largest electricity utilities, Endesa SA and Iberdrola SA. Other big Euro deals included Klepierre SA's and ABP Stichting Algemeen Burgerlijk Pensioenfonds' $4.3 billion for Steen & Stron A/S of Norway.
