Alitalia rescue plans advance, but collapse remains a threat

Plans to rescue Alitalia-Linee Aeree Italiane SpA gained traction Monday after the investment consortium bidding to save the airline and four Alitalia unions agreed the basic terms of a restructuring plan.

Despite the agreement the airline remains in serious danger of collapse. The deal has yet to be approved by five Alitalia unions and does not address the issue of labor contracts, which had been a key sticking point in earlier negotiations.

The talks between the government, unions and the investors, registered as Cia. Aerea Italiana Srl, or CAI, continued over the weekend after CAI returned to the negotiating table following a Friday standoff.
