Bank Watch: Financials end the day in red

  Share     E-Mail    Discussion    Print Story

Although the Dow ended the day in positive territory, a snapshot of the financial services sector shows a very different picture as all the major financial stocks -- not just Lehman Brothers Inc. -- were in the red at close. As a matter of fact, Lehman wasn't the worst of the losers; Merrill Lynch & Co., Wachovia Corp. and Washington Mutual Inc. saw bigger drops. All three are widely believed to be next in line behind troubled Lehman, with the market clearly betting that Washington Mutual is the worst of the bunch. Washington Mutual, which lost 30% of its value Wednesday, is trading at a 17-year low as worries persist over its future. - Matthew Wurtzel
