Bank Watch: Merger madness

The Dow shot up at the end of the day by 121.07 points, mostly based on bank merger rumors and the Congress' continued bailout talks. J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. picked up Washington Mutual Inc. with rumors that the bank might make more acquisitions. Meanwhile, Wachovia Corp.'s shares plunged on rumors that the bank could be in merger discussions with Citigroup Inc., according to a New York Times report, and The Wall Street Journal lists Banco Santander SA and Wells Fargo & Co. - Maria Woehr
