Coke catches flak in China

Billed as the biggest-ever foreign acquisition of a Chinese company, Coca-Cola Co.'s planned $2.4 billion purchase of China Huiyuan Juice Group Ltd. may be starting to fizzle. The China Securities Journal reported Tuesday that unnamed rival juicemakers were considering appealing to the government to block the transaction.

The report, according to Reuters, cited a government official and legal experts suggesting the deal should be cleared. But Reuters also noted that Chinese consumers had reacted with fury that a much-loved consumer products group could fall into the hands of an icon of U.S. capitalism. Foreign investors are closely following the story. "We really are watching the ongoing Coca-Cola-Huiyuan case very carefully in order to see whether it is dealt with by the law or is being dealt with in respect to media and public concerns," said Joerg Wuttke, president of the European Chamber of Commerce in China. - Laura Board
