118-year-old Heller Ehrman dissolves, employees left searching

HellerEhrmanSanFranciscoHQ.png On Sept. 26, Heller Ehrman LLP gave its lawyers 60-day notice of employment, ending 118 years of operation in an emotional goodbye. We've tracked the moves of 96 attorneys so far. (See after the jump and in Movers & shakers.)

Heller's demise started when 14 intellectual property litigators left in mid-September. That triggered a clause in the firm's contract with its banks regarding a line of credit, which led to the seizure of accounts receivables and other expenses.

Emanuel S. Heller opened his law practice in San Francisco in 1890. The San Fran HQ is pictured. The firm's Web site now says it has 650 attorneys and professionals working in 35 practices across 14 offices. All are looking for work. Law.com reported on Tuesday Peter Benvenutti, the chairman of the dissolution committee now controlling the firm, confirmed that Baker & McKenzie and Winston & Strawn LLP, both one-time merger candidates, had withdrawn proposals to pick up large groups of lawyers and their expensive real estate. Heller's dissolution will occur on Nov. 28.

Baker's and Winston's withdrawals mean Heller's attorneys won't leave in groups of hundreds. But there are firms hiring. In Friday's Movers & shakers column, we tracked 96 lawyers who found some relief. Read the column for more in-depth coverage of the lawyers' expertise and what they did at Heller.

Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP hired 26 partners and one senior counsel from Heller Ehrman LLP, including three previous chairmen of that firm: Barry Levin, Robert Rosenfeld and Larry Popofsky. Other partners include:

Our contacts at Orrick had a late addition for the list. Jonathan Palmer, an antitrust partner in Seattle, is also joining the firm. That brings the total to 27 partners and one senior counsel.

Covington & Burling LLP significantly expanded its intellectual property litigation practice, hiring about 50 lawyers from Heller in California and Washington. Covington also launched offices in Silicon Valley and San Diego. The new lawyers include 14 partners, six counsel and a group of associates at all levels.

Patent trial lawyer Robert Haslam will head the launch of the Silicon Valley office, along with partners Stanley Young, Nitin Subhedar and Andrew Byrnes. Former Heller partners opening the San Diego office are Alan Blankenheimer, Laura Muschamp and Jo Dale Carothers. In San Francisco: Robert Fram, Michael Plimack, Christine Haskett and Michael Markman. In Washington: Sturgis Sobin, an ITC practitioner, along with Maureen Browne and Johnny Chiu.

Cooley Godward Kronish LLP took on 15 partners from Heller. Ten will join in Silicon Valley and one in Washington. Four of them will open an office for Cooley in Seattle. They are:
