Bank Watch: Rollercoaster ride

The markets swung up and down with the Dow ending up 401.35 at 8,979.26, the Nasdaq gaining 89.38 to 1,717.71 and the S&P 500 increasing 38.59 to 946.43.

Even with earnings reports, most banks ended the day without losses. Merrill Lynch & Co. and Bank of New York Mellon Corp. both ended in the green. Citigroup Inc. and PNC Financial Services suffered losses after releasing earnings reports Thursday morning. State Street Corp. is still suffering losses after reporting its third-quarter earnings Wednesday. Even though its net income rose, investors are concerned about unrealized losses since its mark-to-market losses grew, according to Forbes. - Maria Woehr
