Bank Watch: Stocks surge

Stocks rallied Thursday. The Dow increased 189.73 points to 9,180.69, the  S&P 500 climbed 24.00 points to 954.09, and the Nasdaq jumped 41.31 points to 1,698.52.

Retailers and banks both had a mixed day. Colgate-Palmolive Co. shares shot up after the company announced it beat analyst estimates for the third quarter, earning $499.9 million in the third quarter, up from $420.1 million last year while Target Corp.'s shares dropped 5% after hedge fund manager William Ackman encouraged the retailer to spin off its real estate division. Most financial institutions ended in the positive Thursday. Among those, American Express Co. shares shot up 3% after the company announced plans to cut 7,000 jobs. - Maria Woehr
