Dow falls below 9,000

Stocks tanked with the Dow falling 678.91 points to 8,579.19, the Nasdaq diving 95.21  points to 1,645 and the S&P 500 falling 75.02 to 909.92. No sector was spared the punishment. IBM Corp., Apple Inc. and many technology companies slipped into the red. Oil services stocks also took a hit while auto shares plummeted with General Motors Corp. losing 31% and Ford Motor Co. falling 20%. S&P said it may downgrade both automakers.

The banking industry also got hit hard. Morgan Stanley took losses on rumors that Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. might back out of its deal to invest in the troubled bank. National City Corp.'s shares remained stable on sale rumors. - Maria Woehr
