Bank Watch: Citigroup and J.P. Morgan stocks slide

Stocks are up Friday morning after Thursday's free fall. The Dow is up 56.94 points at 7,609.23, the S&P 500 is up 8.19 points at 760.63, and the Nasdaq is up 15.20 points at 1,331.32. Financial stocks were generally positive.

Two financial stocks that seem to be taking a beating are Citigroup Inc. and J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. Citigroup is down on various reports including that it is weighing a merger or asset sale due to its plummeting stock price. According to CNBC, CEO Vikrum Pandit said it is not looking to spin off Smith Barney. Meanwhile, J.P. Morgan is down on reports that it is cutting 10% or 3,000 jobs in its investment banking division and is also rumored to be one of the bidders for Chevy Chase Bank. - Maria Woehr
