International Bank Watch: Bank stocks slide, but RBS up as gov't takes majority stake

Global stocks slid on Wednesday. Japan's Nikkei 225 Average dropped 110.71 points to 8213.22, and the FTSEurofirst 300 index slid down 2% at 815.25 points. Bank stocks took a hit as investors fear a global downturn.

Another new appointment over at Standard Chartered plc: Ebenezer Essoka was appointed as CEO of operations in South Africa. BNP Paribas SA is down after news that Japan's financial regulator is ordering the bank to tighten its internal controls after a failed deal with Japan's Urban Corp. Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc's £15 billion ($22.7 billion) share offer closed  below the offer price, leaving the government holding a 58% stake in the bank. - Maria Woehr
