International Bank Watch: HSBC layoffs, Barclays' bonuses and Lloyds' vote

Global stocks were mixed. Japan's Nikkei 225 Average closed down 2.3% as investors grew further concerned over Japan entering into a recession. The FTSEurofirst 300 index was up 0.7% at 3382.97. Financial stocks were in play amid reports of layoff and bonus announcements.

HSBC Holdings plc was down on plans to cut 500 jobs in Asia. Meanwhile, Barclays plc was down even though it tried to appease shareholders by forgoing bonuses and letting existing stockholders in on a share issue that was set aside for Middle Eastern investors. Lloyds TSB Group plc is also down as shareholders get prepared to vote on the Lloyds-HBOS plc deal Wednesday. - Maria Woehr
