International Bank Watch: Betting on the banks

International markets were up with banks leading the stocks. Japan's Nikkei index closed 6% higher Tuesday at 9114.6, and the FTSEurofirst 300 index rose 2% to 952.44 points.

Banking news had the marketplace green Tuesday.  Societe Generale SA was up after its CEO said it could issue another €1.7 billion ($2.17 billion) hybrid bond next year. UBS fell on news of a decline in its third-quarter profit and also news that 3,000 layoffs were part of the bank's plan to get through a trying fourth quarter. Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc was down after it reported lower-than-expected write-downs on toxic assets, with expectations that there would be more this quarter. Shares of  Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. were up after Credit Suisse Group raised its outlook to "overweight." - Maria Woehr
