The odds-on favorites for the coveted Cabinet post are similar to the chatter The Deal's Washington bureau is reporting:

  • Federal Reserve of New York President Timothy Geithner with 2 to 1 odds
  • Former President Clinton Treasury Secretary Larry Summers with 5 to 2 odds

Those odds are closer than Tuesday's election. None of the other five names come nearly as close on Home Front's list:

  • Former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker at 12 to 1
  • Current Federal Deposit Insurance Co. Chairman Sheila Bair at 15 to 1
  • J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. CEO Jamie Dimon at 30 to 1
  • Former Clinton Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin at 32 to 1
  • Financier Warren Buffett at 100 to 1

While The Deal's Washington bureau chief Bill McConnell called Bair's candidacy a dark horse, it seems US News & World Report thinks there are longer shots. Additionally, it's worth noting that the news magazine doesn't offer odds on New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, who has been mentioned by The Star-Ledger and other local media as a possible candidate.

Hopefully the wait will be over before the weekend as the president-elect is expected to make his choice by Friday. - Matthew Wurtzel
