White House unaware that regulators were even talking about a Citi bailout

George_Bush_Pensive.jpgEven as three of the most important financial arms of the U.S. government held around-the-clock negotiations with Citigroup Inc. on a bailout that would restore confidence in the bank, reporters traveling with the president on Air Force One were told that the White House was unaware of any talks between regulators and Citi.

Reuters is reporting that:

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said on Sunday she knew of no talks going on between banking giant Citigroup and the federal government for financial aid. Speaking to reporters traveling with President George W. Bush, who is returning to Washington after attending the Asia-Pacific summit in Peru, Perino declined to comment on whether the president supported a federal rescue package for Citigroup.
One can only assume that Perino was trying to protect her boss from taking a definite position on an issue that is quite unpopular with fiscal conservatives. - George White
