Most bank stocks were in the red as there was no shortage of banking news. Bank of New York Mellon Corp. was down after a judge said that the Russian government's $22.5 billion lawsuit against it should be settled out of court. Russia sued the bank after its former vice president, Lucy Edwards, alledgedly illegally aided in the transfer of $7 billion out of Russia in the late 1990s.
