International Bank Watch: HSBC dives, as Credit Suisse gets creative with bonuses

International markets were mixed Thursday. Japan's Nikkei 225 Average was up 54.71 points, or 0.6%, at 8667.23 as investors hope the Bank of Japan will follow the U.S. Federal Reserve's lowering of interest rates. Meanwhile, the FTSEurofirst 300 index decreased by 10.55 points to 4313.64. Banks were mostly in the negative due to loses from Madoff's alleged $50 billion Ponzi scheme.

One of the biggest victims, HSBC Holdings plc, is still getting slammed in the markets. HSBC said it has combined exposure of about $1 billion. Barclays plc is down. The bank announced it has laid off 3,500 employees from Barclays Capital's takeover of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. BNP Paribas SA's stock is down. The bank called off a shareholder meeting after its plan to buy Fortis SA/NV assets was stalled by the Brussels Court of Appeal. Credit Suisse Group announced that the investment bank is going to pay employees' bonuses through $5 billion of its most illiquid loans and bonds. UBS' stocks are down. Wealth Management US, a unit of UBS, recently hired Brad Smithy from Merrill Lynch & Co. as an executive director and a market area manager. Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc raised $757.7 million from its Australian unit. - Maria Woehr
