Madoff victims tally up their losses

score card.jpgWith the list of Bernard Madoff's victims growing by the hour and possibly reaching into the thousands, keeping up with who's lost what is getting rather difficult. With the tally of exposure by hedge funds, banks and individuals already reaching $35 billion, Bloomberg has put together a handy chart for those keeping score.

According to the news service's research those with the largest exposure include:

  • Access International Advisor, $1.4 billion
  • Banco Santander SA, $3.1 billion
  • Bank Medici AG, $2.1 billion
  • Fortis Bank Netherlands, $1.4 billion
  • Ascot Partners LLC, nearly $1.8 billion
  • HSBC Holdings plc, $1 billion
  • JEHT Foundation, undetermined; will close
  • Kingate Management Ltd., $3.5 billion   
  • Tremont Capital Management, $3.3 billion   
  • Union Bancaire Privee, $1.08 billion

With the list comprised mostly hedge funds, Madoff will likely leave the already beleagureed industry with a serious black eye and end up the focal point of a perfect storm for that industry as investors withdraw funds in record amounts and Congress jumps in to regulate it. - George White
