Bank Watch: Banks dive on analyst predictions

The markets fell Monday. The Dow  was down 81.80 points at 8,952.89, the S&P 500 decreased 4.35 points to 927.45, and the Nasdaq was down 4.18 points at 1,628.03. Financial stocks were mostly down, with J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. and SunTrust Banks Inc. hurting the most.

Financial institutions suffered due to 2009 estimate cuts by Deutsche Bank AG analyst Mike Mayo on banks including J.P. Morgan Chase & Co, Wells Fargo & Co., Bank of America Corp., SunTrust Banks Inc. and Citigroup Inc. U.S. Bancorp was down on news that it will release its fourth-quarter 2008 earnings before the market opens on Jan. 21. Mayo lowered U.S. Bancorp estimates by 50 cents to $1.55 and lowered 2010 EPS estimates by 30 cents to $2.00. Meanwhile Goldman Sachs Group Inc. enjoyed a rally. - Maria Woehr
