Bank Watch: Execs flee from BofA; Citigroup to help with mortgages

It was a mixed day for stocks, with the Dow ending down 27.24 points at 8,742.46, the S&P 500 up 3.08 at 909.73 and the Nasdaq gaining 17.95 points to end the day at 1,617.01. Financial stocks were mixed.

Citigroup Inc. ended the day up. Senate Democrats reached an agreement with Citigroup that would allow bankruptcy judges to modify mortgages that were set up prior to the enactment of the bill, eliminate some mortgage debt and help reduce foreclosures. Bank of America Corp.'s shares were down. Merill Lynch & Co.'s co-head of European markets, Brent Clapacs, is resigning after Merrill's merger with Bank of America. He joins Merrill's former brokerage head Bob McCann, general counsel Rosemary Berkery and vice chairman Jeff Edwards. Regions Financial Corp.'s stock was also down. The bank announced several position changes, including the promotion of Bill Ritter, son of CEO Dowd Ritter, to senior executive vice president and president of the central region. - Maria Woeher
